Time magazine just dropped their yearly list of the 100 most influential people in AI. I’ve used ChatGPT to help me categorise the data and made a clean and searchable dataset of the top 100 people in AI from this and last year. In total 188 people! Time lists the 100 most influential people in AI. So, Time magazine just dropped a refreshed look at the top 100 most influential people in AI.

Below I’m sharing some insights I found after categorising the data and also comparing to the previous edition of this list – something you won’t find elsewhere:

  1. More shapers, less leaders. Shaping the regulation of the rapidly advancing AI technologies is a hot topic this year. Time featured less leaders (e.g. CEOs of AI companies) and more shapers (e.g. politicians and regulators) this year.

  1. Only 8 people made the list two years in a row. I’m a bit surprised by how few people are making Time’s list again this year. Apparently, Time interviews members of last year’s list to nominate new candidates – so maybe they all just want to see some fresh blood. Or maybe AI is changing super fast. In any case, most people that appear this year are mostly already household names in AI, and definitely continue to make an impact on the space.

  1. Less women on the list this year, from 42% to 29%. Please note that I’ve classified genders using ChatGPT (not fully reliable). But it’s interesting that distribution has changed this much.
